How to list multiple items in one eBay listing
You can list multiple items in one listing on eBay three ways: multi-quantity for identical units, variations for one item in different sizes or colors, or a lot that sells mixed items for one price. Which fits depends on whether the units are identical and whether the buyer has to choose between them.
Picture three piles on the table: twelve identical phone cases, one jacket in four sizes, and a box of mixed kitchen tools. Each pile can go up as one listing, but not the same kind of listing. The cases are a multi-quantity listing, which is one fixed-price listing with a Quantity above 1. The jacket is a variation listing, and one of those holds up to 250 variations. The box is a lot.
Getting it right matters for two reasons. eBay won't let you run identical units as separate fixed-price listings, and every listing you don't create is setup you don't repeat.
Which way should you list multiple items on eBay?
The way to list multiple items on eBay follows from what the units are. Identical units go in a multi-quantity listing, one item in several sizes or colors goes in a variation listing, and different items sold together go in a lot. The last row of the table is the case where one listing is the wrong call.
| Your items | Structure | What the buyer does | What you give up |
|---|---|---|---|
| Identical: same item, same condition | Multi-quantity listing | Picks how many to buy | The auction format. Multi-quantity is fixed price only |
| One item in several sizes, colors or styles | Variation listing | Picks a size or color from a menu, then how many | The auction format, and the category has to support variations |
| Different items that belong together | Lot | Buys everything for one price | Selling any piece on its own while the lot is live |
| Items worth noticeably different amounts | Separate listings | Buys the one they want | The setup time a single listing would save |
Identical, nothing to choose: multi-quantity. Same item, the buyer picks a size or color: variations. Different items sold for one price: a lot.
How do you list multiples of the same item on eBay?
You list multiples of the same item on eBay by choosing the fixed price format and entering how many you have in the Quantity field. Fixed-price listings are Good 'Til Canceled, so the listing stays active until you sell the number you entered or end it. In Seller Hub's advanced listing tool:
- Open the listing formIn Seller Hub, go to Listings, select Create listing and choose Single listing.
- Choose Buy It Now in the Pricing sectioneBay words this two ways: a Buy It Now choice in the Format dropdown, or a Buy it Now toggle. Either way, a multi-quantity listing needs fixed price. If the item is already live as an auction, an eBay Community mentor explains that you have to end it and relist it as fixed price.
- Enter the quantitySelect Quantity and type the number of identical units you have. If an option you need isn't in the form, the See pricing options dropdown turns it on.
- Write it once for all of themPhotos, title, item specifics and description get written one time, because every unit is the same. Then select Done.
When the last unit sells, eBay's out-of-stock option keeps the listing active but hidden from search results, so it's still there when you restock.
Insertion fees count per listing, not per unit. eBay charges the insertion fee once for a listing with multiple items, and again each time a Good 'Til Canceled listing renews. Rates change, so read them on eBay's selling fees page.
How do you list different sizes or colors in one eBay listing?
You list different sizes or colors in one eBay listing by creating a variation listing: one fixed-price listing where the buyer picks the size, color or style from a menu. Three conditions apply: fixed price only, the same payment methods and shipping costs for every variation, and a category that supports variations.
| Limit | eBay's number |
|---|---|
| Variation details (such as size or color) per listing | 5 |
| Values for each detail | Up to 50 |
| Variations in one listing | Up to 250, for no additional fee |
| Photos per variation | Up to 24 |
Those limits appear on eBay's variations help page and in its export guide. To build one in Seller Hub:
- Select Create listing, then Single listing, and pick a category that supports variations.
- Find the Variations section. If it isn't there, go to Pricing, select Edit, set the Auction toggle to off and select Done. The Variations section then appears above the Condition section.
- Add your details (size, color) and their values. An eBay Community mentor warns that a variation detail can't share a name with one of eBay's own item specifics.
- Add photos for each variation, up to 24 each.
- Set a quantity and a price for each variation, then finish the listing.
Can you build one in the eBay app? eBay's help doesn't say. It describes the listing tool as working in desktop and mobile web browsers, and a mentor in the same Community thread said it "can only be accessed from a computer, not the app." Plan on a web browser.
How do you create a bundle or lot listing on eBay?
You create a lot listing on eBay by listing the group as one item: one title, one price, every piece named in the description and shown in the photos. We found no eBay help page on mixed lots, so what follows is what sellers and mentors say on eBay's Community boards, not eBay policy.
A lot of different items
- Lead the title with the count. Lot of 12 comes first, so the buyer knows it's a lot before anything else, then the category and the best names in the box. A seller suggested that format in an eBay Community thread on selling multiple items as one lot.
- Name the pieces in the description. Sellers in that thread split on how far to go: one doesn't bother to inventory a lot, another says the description is the only place with room for a full list. Our take: if a piece in the box is one people search for by name, name it.
- Shoot the whole group together, then closer shots so a buyer can tell what each piece is.
- Say what you can't vouch for. If you haven't tested everything, one seller in the thread suggested a line saying the lot was acquired over many years and not every piece is guaranteed to work. Better the buyer reads that before they buy than finds out after.
Sell as lot: a set of identical units
eBay's other kind of lot is a pricing setting: a fixed-price listing can be set to sell as a lot. Sellers in an eBay Community thread on the option describe how it works: the quantity becomes the number of lots, and each lot bought ships whole. With 30 identical units sold in lots of 2, one seller's example becomes a quantity of 15, and each lot bought ships 2. So "lot" on eBay means two different things, and only the mixed kind needs the steps above.
Why not list each unit separately on eBay?
You can't list identical units as separate fixed-price listings on eBay. eBay's duplicate listings policy says it doesn't allow more than one fixed price listing of an identical item at the same time from the same seller. The policy's own alternatives are listing identical items in one fixed-price listing using eBay bulk listing, or variations for items that differ in size or color.
The main exceptions are narrow: identical auction-style listings (only one without bids shows to buyers at a time, and the copies must match on start price, reserve, title and description, with no Buy It Now), and up to 5 fixed-price listings for an item made to fit different devices, each naming the brand or model. Breaking the rule can mean a removed listing, a warning, restrictions or account suspension.
The other reason is time. Some of every listing is setup you do once however many units it holds: identifying the item, the title, item specifics, description, price and shipping. Photos and measuring are per unit, unless the units are identical and can share them.
| Structure | Formula | Minutes |
|---|---|---|
| 12 separate listings | N x (S + P) | 12 x 9 = 108 |
| One multi-quantity listing, 12 identical units | S + P | 6 + 3 = 9 |
| One variation listing, 12 variations | S + N x P | 6 + 36 = 42 |
| One lot, 12 different items | S + N x d + g | 6 + 12 + 4 = 22 |
In plain words: listing 12 units separately repeats the same 6 minutes of setup 12 times. One listing does that setup once, and the rows differ only in how much per-unit work is left.
These are example inputs picked for easy arithmetic, not typical times: N = 12 units, S = 6 minutes of shared setup per listing, P = 3 minutes of photos and measuring per unit, d = 1 minute to name each item in a lot's description, g = 4 minutes for the lot's group shot and close-ups. Swap in your own. The first row is a baseline only: for identical units at a fixed price, the duplicate rule above doesn't allow it.
One listing saves (N - 1) x S, the setup you'd otherwise repeat. What it does to per-unit minutes depends on the structure: identical units can share one set of photos, a lot swaps per-unit photos for a group shot and a line per item, and variations keep every per-unit photo.
In the example, the variation listing saves 11 x 6 = 66 minutes against 12 separate listings and still spends 36 minutes on photos. Put your own setup and per-unit minutes into the throughput calculator. If per-unit work is the bigger number, batching photos and measuring by station is where the next saving is.
Is there a way to bulk list on eBay?
Yes, two. In Seller Hub, select Create listing and choose Multiple listing instead of Single listing. eBay's announcement of its AI bulk listing tool adds a second choice in the same menu, Multiple listings from photos, which scans your photos and suggests categories, titles and item specifics in draft listings. eBay says it's open to US sellers on desktop and mobile web.
With a stack on the table, this is the order we'd work in:
- Sort before you open Seller Hub. Identical units in one pile, sizes and colors of the same item in another, odds and ends that belong together in a box for a lot. Whatever doesn't fit a pile is a one-off that gets its own listing.
- List the piles as single listings. The identical pile gets a quantity and the size run gets variations, using the steps above. Bulk tools don't change the duplicate rule: identical units still go in one listing.
- Shoot the one-offs the same way every time. Multiple listings from photos asks how many photos go in each draft before you upload, so give every item the same number of shots, in order. That's our suggestion, not an eBay instruction.
- Upload the one-offs in one batch. Each item comes back as its own draft listing, which keeps you inside the duplicate rule as long as no two of them are identical.
When is one listing the wrong choice?
One listing is the wrong choice when the units don't share a price, a condition or a buyer. This is our judgement, not an eBay rule:
- Pieces worth noticeably different amounts. A lot has one price, so the best piece gets priced along with the rest.
- A piece that would sell on its own. A buyer who wants only that piece has to buy the whole lot or pass.
- Units in different conditions. A multi-quantity listing gives every unit one description, and a scuffed unit and a mint one need different descriptions.
- Items that ship differently. Every variation in a listing shares the same shipping costs, so an item that ships differently needs its own listing.
Those go in separate listings. For items that are close but not identical, put the repeated parts in a listing template so you aren't retyping them in each one. The listing time audit shows whether setup or per-unit work is your bigger cost before you decide.
